Born to Florence and Stanley
Smagala in Deer Park, NY, Stan was the youngest of seven children; Linda,
Bob, Gary, Tom, Drew and Jim. Stan attended Deer Park High School and graduated
from the State University at Farmingdale.
In June 1998, Stan married
Dena at St. William the Abbot Roman Catholic Church and they settled down
in Holbrook, NY. Although Stan and Dena cherished the time they spent together
as a couple, it wasn't very long before they decided that a child would add
to their family. They were therefore overjoyed to find out that they are expecting
a child this coming January. Stan and Dena spent many days together getting
ready for the babyıs arrival and parenthood. Stan often talked to the guys
in the firehouse about how much he and Dena loved children and how he enjoyed
spending time with his nieces and nephews and visiting Denaıs classroom.
Stan's love and appreciation
for family extended to the firehouse. Following in his older brother Jim's
footsteps, Stan joined the New York City Fire Department in February 1996.
He was assigned to Engine 226 and later completed a rotational training program
at Engine 76 in Manhattan and Ladder 152 in Queens. Stan immediately fit in
with the firefighters of Engine 226 and quickly became a presence in the firehouse
as all appreciated his charm, humor and ability as a fireman. Everyone knew
that they could count on Stan to bring them together even during the most
difficult situations.
When Stan wasn't at the
firehouse he was working on building a small business, spending time with
his family and friends, or sprucing up his home. Stan might also be found
on the golf course where the guys joked that his smooth swing and country
club looks were a natural fit. Looks can be deceiving, however, as Stan was
acknowledged to be one of the strongest guys in the firehouse easily benching
twice his own weight. Stan knew how important it was to his job to stay in
good physical health. Stan was conscientious and caring across the board.
He loved his family, he
loved his friends and he loved his work.
